    Setpoints and deadbands

    A setpoint without a deadband produces a valve that cycles constantly. Deadband, feed limits and lockout timers are what make an automatic system stable rather than merely automatic.

    Alarms that mean something

    An alarm nobody acts on is noise. Limits should be set so that an alarm indicates a condition requiring a decision — low drum level, failed feed verification, sensor out of range — not a normal excursion.

    Logging and trend

    A trend line answers questions a spot reading cannot: was this gradual or sudden, does it track production, did it start when the make-up source changed. Logged history is what makes an investigation possible at all.

    Feed verification

    The controller calling for a dose is not proof that a dose was delivered. Flow verification, pulse feedback or level tracking confirms the chemical actually left the drum.
